This Week’s New River Music
Song: Capricorn
Artist: Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend has released their first new music in five years! Their upcoming fifth studio album’s music in influenced by the Indian classical music tradition, raga after Ezra Koenig took singing lessons in that style in Japan. The new album, Only God Was Above Us, is set to be released April 5th. ‘Capricorn’ is a song about aging and trudging along in life in what feels like the fallout of some bygone heyday, and sounds as classic as ever from the NYC indie-rock band. Their tour stops at TD Garden in Boston on September 27.
Song: Girl from the Record Shop
Artist: Frank Turner
New music from English folk-punk singer, Frank Turner. Frank is known for his outrageously high-energy live shows. His fans are rabid; they know the words to every one of his songs, and he has them in the palm of his hand. He’s getting ready to release his 10th studio album, Undefeated on May 3. ‘Girl from the Record Shop’ is a short little ditty about a chance encounter with a girl in a record shop who left a lasting impression on him. It’s a reflection on the unpredictability of life and the significance of small moments.
Song: Good Together
Artist: Lake Street Dive
With roots in Boston, Brooklyn-based band Lake Street Dive brings us their new song ahead of the album of the same name, Good Together. The track is a total groove in 7/4 time. The band says there’s a lot to be angry about in the world right now, a lot of pain and rage and divisiveness, but it isn’t sustainable to constantly live in that anger—you need something else to keep you going. They say joy is a great way to sustain yourself, and they want to encourage everyone to stay aware of that. In a way this album is their way of saying, take your joy very seriously.
Song: Someday, Someday
Artist: Pete Yorn
After his role as a mysterious hitman in the Oscar-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon, New Jersey’s Pete Yorn is now getting ready to release a new album. He gained international recognition with his debut album Musicforthemorningafter when it was released in 2001. Since then, he’s released ten albums. This track is an introspective acoustic number that finds Pete ruminating on a relationship that’s been relegated to the fringes of life. It features Rami Jaffee, of Foo Fighters, on keys.
