Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum-selling, two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy Award-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” is considered one of the premier interpreters of American standards. A true musical treasure, this multi-platinum-selling singer/pianist captures the essence of popular music, bringing insight and passion to a rich tapestry of songs from the big band era to pop, jazz, and Broadway. His 200-plus shows a year have included performances at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, and the Hollywood Bowl as well as the White House and Buckingham Palace.
The Great American Songbook Foundation is a non-profit organization (501-c-3) with a mission to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. It was founded by Michael Feinstein in 2007 and is headquartered at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana.
The organization conducts several programs in support of its mission:
· The Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy and Competition – hosts a national competition for young singers dedicated solely to the music of the Songbook
· The Great American Songbook Archive – houses over 100,000 physical artifacts such as sheet music, personal papers, musical arrangements and book that are available to students, educators and researchers
· The Great American Songbook Gallery – displays rotating public exhibits that share the history, music and culture of the Songbook
· The Great American Songbook Hall of Fame – recognizes composers, lyricists and performers for their significant contributions to the Songbook
A free standing Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Museum, similar to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame, is a long term goal of the Foundation. A facility, inspired by the Great American Songbook and dedicated to a first class visitor experience, will ensure that the music is accessible, revered and celebrated by future generations.
